چکیده

Investigations were conducted to evaluate the performance of a two-stroke, single cylinder, spark ignition (SI) engine, with gasohol (80% gasoline and 20% ethanol by volume) having copper coated engine [CCE, copper-(thickness, 300 μ) coated on piston crown, inner side of cylinder head] provided with catalytic converter with different catalysts of sponge iron and manganese ore and compared with conventional SI engine (CE) with pure gasoline operation. Performance parameters of brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature and volumetric efficiency were determined at various magnitudes of brake mean effective pressure. A microprocessorbased analyzer was used for the measurement of carbon monoxide (CO) and un-burnt hydro carbons (UBHC) in the exhaust of the engine at full load operation of the engine. Aldehydes were measured by DNPH (dinitrophenyl hydrazine) method. Combustion characteristics were measured with a special pressure-crank angle software package. Peak brake thermal efficiency increased by 24% with CCE with gasohol in comparison with CE with pure gasoline operation. CCE with gasohol considerably reduced emissions in comparison with CE with pure gasoline operation. Sponge iron was proved to be efficient in reducing CO and UBHC emissions in comparison with manganese ore. Catalytic converter with air injection significantly reduced emission with test fuels on both configurations of the engine. Keywords-S.I. Influence of Gasohol on Performance Parameters and Emissions Characteristics of Two Stroke Copper Coated Spark Ignition Engine

The world’s rapidly dwindling crude oil supplies, their rising cost and the rapid growing of automobile pollutions from fossil fuels have led to an intensive search for alternative fuels. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance and control the exhaust emissions from two-stroke, single cylinder, spark ignition (SI) engine, with alcohol blended gasoline (80% gasoline and 20% ethano...

Control of aldehyde emissions from copper coated spark ignition engine fueled with alcohol blended gasoline

The major pollutants emitted from spark ignition (SI) engine are carbon monoxide (CO) and unburnt hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides which are hazardous to human beings and environment. If the engine is run with alcohol blended alternate fuels, aldehydes are emitted as significant pollutants, which are carcinogenic and harmful in nature. Hence, control of these aldehyde emissions call for immediate ...

The Effects of Ethanol–gasoline Blend on Performance and Exhaust Emission Characteristics of Spark Ignition Engines

The effects of unleaded gasoline and unleaded gasoline–ethanol blends on engine performance and pollutant emissions were investigated experimentally in a single cylinder, four-stroke spark-ignition engine with variable engine speeds (2600–3500 rpm). Four different blends on a volume basis were applied. These are E0 (0% ethanol + 100% unleaded gasoline), E3 (3% ethanol + 97% unleaded gasoline), ...
